Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

What Is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

TMS is for clients that are suffering from depression that have not had TMSsuccess with other types of treatment like antidepressants. TMS is cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration. It is ran through a magnetic coil focusing on the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for the mood regulation. The sessions last usually 60 min once a week for 4 or so weeks. With the electrical currents focusing on points in the brain it helps release dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. Which with the release of these helps with the depression.

What Should I Expect At My First Session

First there will be a test to see what your motor threshold is and this is done by the movement in your right thumb. It will tell the doctor what threshold of magnetic field strength to be used in your treatment. After that the treatment will start. It is usually about a 45 min session when starting the TMS. It will feel like somebody flicking the front of your forehead which will happen very fast. After you are done some experience a headache and some do not. You are able to go back to your normal routines for the day.

How Effective Is It?

In the clinical trials of TMS it was demonstrated very effective. In an independent randomized controlled trial by the NIMH or the National Institute of Mental Health, 307 were treated with TMS for 4 to 6 weeks. when their treatments ended the TMS group was four more times more likely to go into remission compared to the ones that did not. Even better is that by the end of a 12 month maintenance period 2 out of 3 patients did not need any more treatment.

Will TMS Cause Memory Loss?

No, It was tested for it effects on the memory and after the clinical trials were done the TMS was declared to not have any negative effects on memory.

Will TMS Cause Brain Tumors?

No, It uses the same strength of magnetic fields as Magnetic Resonance Imaging devices. Which are used in hospitals all around the U.S.

How Uncomfortable is TMS?

Most patients report not being uncomfortable during the session if they do it is only mild to moderate and after the first week 98% report not even noticing it.

A special thanks to for helping me get a foot up when I had an accident to give me the funding I needed to start my business. With out them I would have never made it.
